Mira-Bhayandar: The Navghar police have booked ten members of a community for allegedly imposing a social boycott on a 34-year-old widow in Bhayandar.

Holding the woman responsible for the death of her husband who committed suicide by hanging himself on 25, May, 2024, the accused spread messages on social media platforms instructing all members of the community not to associate with the woman else they would meet with the same fate.

The accused also threatened the woman’s parents and relatives not to interact with the woman who was not allowed to attend the final rites of her husband. Moreover, the woman was restricted to meet her daughters aged 13 and 6 years.

In her complaint to the police, the woman stated due to domestic quarrels, she had left her husband’s house in Bhayandar and shifted to Vasai on 23, May, 2024 (two days before her husband committed suicide). 34 days after her husband ended his life, an offence was registered against for abetting the suicide.

The woman was granted pre-arrest bail by the Mumbai High Court. Based on her complaint, the Navghar police registered an offence against ten people including the father-in-law of the complainant under the relevant sections of the Maharashtra Prohibition of People from Social Boycott (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act which prohibits social boycott in the name of caste, community, religion, rituals or customs.

However, no arrests have been made so far in the case. Further investigations were underway. The accused being related to the woman, their names have been withheld to protect her identity.
