In a bid to encourage citizens to donate unused belongings like old clothes, books, utensils, toys, furniture, e-waste, plastic items, footwear and other items, which could further be refurbished, reused or processed for making new ones, the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has set up set six ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’ (RRR) centres at the ward level in Mira Bhayandar.
Once collected, these items will be handed over to various stakeholders to be refurbished for reuse or converted into new products, which will be made available to needy people. The RRR centres, which were inaugurated by Municipal Commissioner Dilip Dhole, are a part of the ‘Meri Life, Mera Swachh Shehar’ project launched under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0, by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).

According to officials attached to the sanitation department, residents and commercial establishments can donate/ handover the items to on-duty civic personnel between 7am-1pm at the RRR centres in Uttan Chowk (Bhoot Bangla), Maxus Mall, Near Hanuman Temple (Navghar Naka), Hyderi Chowk, near municipal chief’s bungalow and below Kashimira fly-over-bridge.
The centres which received an encouraging response from citizens will conclude their operations on World Environment Day which falls on June 5. However, the administration is mooting upon the idea of keeping some centres operational all year long which according to officials will not only help achieve the objective of undertaking collective action for protecting and conserving the environment by adopting sustainable living habits, but will also reduce waste generation.
Apart from eight to ten tonne of industrial and bio-medical waste, the civic administration is saddled with the daunting task of disposing off an overload of more than 450 metric tonne of garbage by the twin-city every day. MBMC’s sole waste processing unit is located in the Dhaavgi area of Uttan which is nearly 14km away from Kashimira.
