The Maharashtra Transport Department is set to introduce random drug testing for drivers using the SoToxa drug screening system. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced the initiative in the state assembly on Tuesday, emphasizing its role in reducing accidents and ensuring safer public transport.
According to sources, SoToxa – an Oral Fluid Mobile Test System – is designed for rapid drug screening and detection through oral fluid analysis. The handheld analyzer is lightweight, compact, and easy to use, providing test results within minutes, making it ideal for roadside drug screening across all vehicle types and workplace monitoring.
The new measure aims to deter drivers, including those operating buses, cars, and trucks from driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. MSRTC and BEST bus drivers will also be subjected to these tests.
"It will involve random drug tests, particularly targeting those suspected of substance abuse, to ensure accountability among transport staff," said an official.
"Ensuring public safety is our top priority. With the implementation of regular drug testing, we aim to minimize risks posed by intoxicated drivers and strengthen Maharashtra’s public transport system," stated Sarnaik.
According to officials, the initiative is expected to significantly reduce road accidents by preventing intoxicated driving. It aligns with Maharashtra’s anti-drug policy and supports the enforcement of relevant laws. By implementing stringent screenings, authorities hope to instill a sense of responsibility among transport employees and ensure a safer, more reliable commute for passengers.
"This move is part of the government's broader strategy to implement stricter safety regulations in public transportation. By enforcing both routine and surprise drug tests, Maharashtra aims to set a strong precedent for road safety while improving the overall efficiency and credibility of the transport sector," said an official.
