The Maharashtra Revenue Department has issued a strong directive emphasizing strict disciplinary action against officers who repeatedly leave headquarters without prior approval from their senior officers.
A circular issued by the Revenue Department, citing the General Administration Department, states that if any officer leaves headquarters without proper permission, they will first receive a strict warning. If the behavior continues, disciplinary proceedings will be initiated, including the possibility of immediate suspension. The department clarified that it is committed to public service and will not tolerate any negligence in administrative responsibilities.
The directive highlights that several officials — ranging from Tehsildars to Selection Grade Additional District Collectors, the Inspector General of Registration and Controller of Stamps, and the Settlement Commissioner and Director of Land Records — have been found repeatedly absent from office without informing their seniors. These findings were confirmed after an investigation prompted by public complaints received by Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule.
The unauthorized absence of officials, especially during critical departmental meetings or emergencies, has led to disruptions in administrative functioning and inconvenience to the public. Many citizens have been left waiting for their work to be addressed due to the unavailability of the concerned officials.
The circular emphasizes that while absences on official leave or government duties will be considered valid, all officers are otherwise expected to remain present at headquarters. Unauthorized absences will now be considered a serious breach of duty. Senior officers will also be held accountable if their subordinates are found violating these instructions.
“This action is necessary to maintain discipline, efficiency, and a people-centric administration,” the circular stated. “The Revenue Department exists to serve the public, not to cause delays. Those who repeatedly remain absent without permission will be given one chance, after which strict action will be taken.”
