Buldhana: Residents from approximately 15 villages in Shegaon taluka, Buldana district, are living in a state of worry due to a troubling trend of hair loss that has lasted for three months. What began as a concerning issue with sudden hair loss has escalated, as villagers are now alarmed by a new problem: the loss of fingernails.
This has increased their anxiety and left them questioning the root cause. Reports suggest that this issue extends beyond Shegaon, as residents of Bondgaon are also experiencing fingernail loss following hair fall, amplifying the overall fear in the region.
The lack of action from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) after two months has left the villagers feeling uneasy. Many suspect that the hair loss is associated with contaminated water, especially after high nitrate levels were found. District Health Officer Amol Gite has confirmed that the water is not safe for consumption, noting that nitrate levels are dangerously high at 54 per cent, far exceeding the acceptable limit of 10 percent.

Additionally, the sodium content in the water is significantly elevated, recorded at 2100, compared to the normal level of 110. With over 70 residents from Bondgaon and Khatkhed reporting hair loss and baldness, fear continues to escalate, as health risks become increasingly apparent due to the toxic nature of the local water supply.
