Palghar, Maharashtra: In an ambitious move to combat climate change and promote sustainable development, the Government of Maharashtra has established an “Environment and Sustainable Development Task Force" under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. One of the key focus areas of this task force is to encourage large-scale bamboo cultivation across the state as an alternative to fossil fuels and a means to improve environmental sustainability.
Bamboo cultivation is expected to bring transformative changes to the lives of farmers while also helping to reduce environmental degradation. Beyond its ecological benefits, bamboo holds significant economic potential — it is widely used in construction, furniture-making, paper production, and most notably, as a sustainable fuel source. Given its fast growth and versatility, bamboo is increasingly being seen as a viable and long-term crop option for farmers.
As part of this initiative, bamboo cultivation workshops, referred to as Bamboo Mission Farmer Workshops, will be organised across all talukas of Palghar district from May 16 to May 19. These events are being conducted under the guidance of Pasha Patel, Chairman of the State Agricultural Price Commission, who also heads the executive committee of the Environment Task Force. The workshops are also supported by Vivek Bhau Pandit, President of the State Tribal Development Review Committee.
Key government departments and agencies involved in bamboo cultivation will be present at the workshops, providing farmers with information, guidance, and support.
