On the occasion of Gokulashtami, the Maharashtra state government has approved insurance coverage for approximately 1.5 lakh Govindas participating in Dahi Handi celebrations. This initiative follows sustained efforts by Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik and Purvesh Sarnaik, associate of Yuva Sena chief Aaditya Thackeray, who submitted a formal request to Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

Positive Response from Deputy CM

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde responded positively to the demand. The insurance will be offered via the Sports and Youth Services Department, ensuring participants are safeguarded during the physically demanding and risky festivities.

Role of Oriental Insurance

The insurance scheme will be implemented through the “Govinda Samanya Samiti (Maha)” planning committee. Oriental Insurance Company Limited has been selected as the official provider of the coverage.

Expanded Coverage This Year

Last year, 1.25 lakh Govindas were insured. Recognizing the growing participation and risk, the state has expanded the coverage to 1.5 lakh individuals this year. This move is expected to bring much-needed relief to participants in case of accidents or injuries during human pyramid formations.

Government Order Issued

A formal government resolution has been issued approving the proposal. The Maharashtra State Dahi Handi Govinda Association will coordinate document submission, and the government will bear the full cost of the premium.

Premium Amount and Implementation

The state has sanctioned a total premium of ₹1,12,50,000. The Sports and Youth Services Department has been directed to implement the scheme without delay to ensure timely coverage ahead of the festival.
