Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has mandated that all private companies establish Vishakha Committees to safeguard women’s safety and dignity at the workplace. While these committees are already in place across government offices, private firms must now comply, with periodic reviews to ensure adherence.

Decision Announced

Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare announced the decision in the Legislative Council while responding to member Chitra Wagh’s query. She noted that some private establishments had yet to implement these committees, prompting the government to conduct regular compliance checks.

A dedicated oversight committee comprising officials from various departments will monitor the formation and effectiveness of Vishakha Committees. These bodies will be responsible for swiftly addressing complaints and ensuring prompt action. Additionally, the state government has directed the formation of grievance redressal committees in workplaces and local grievance committees at the district level.

Currently, 74,010 Vishakha Committees have been established across Maharashtra. For workplaces with fewer than 10 employees or cases involving employers, 36 local grievance committees operate at the district level. The Women and Child Development Department has been designated as the coordinating authority, with nodal officers appointed at district, municipal, and taluka levels for smooth implementation.

To further streamline grievance redressal, the government has launched the "She Box" online portal, allowing women to file complaints. Regular follow-ups through meetings and circulars will ensure a secure, dignified, and empowering work environment for women.
