Mumbai | July 16, 2025: In a heartfelt and meaningful event centered on the rights and inclusion of special children, Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde assured full governmental support to address the challenges faced by children with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

He was speaking at a special screening of the film ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’, produced by veteran actor Aamir Khan and directed by P.S. Prasanna, held at INOX Theatre, Nariman Poiny Mumbai. The film, inspired by the lives of children with Down syndrome and other neurodivergent conditions, powerfully portrays their daily struggles and triumphs in a society still learning to embrace inclusivity.

The screening was organized by Shiv Sena Leader Shaina NC, who has been a vocal advocate for the rights of special children. The event transformed into a powerful platform for policy advocacy, with a collective call to the Maharashtra Government and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to implement inclusive education practices across public schools.

Government’s Full Commitment

Deputy CM Shinde commended the film’s creators for addressing such a sensitive and vital issue with emotional depth and maturity. “Special children are not different from others in their right to education,” he said. “The Maharashtra government is committed to providing all necessary support to ensure their integration into mainstream schools. If needed, decisions will also be positively considered at the BMC level.”

He further added that Maharashtra was the first state in India to create a dedicated Ministry for Divyang (differently-abled) persons and reiterated that the government is open to implementing forward-thinking initiatives at both state and municipal levels.

“We thank the makers of ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ for highlighting the real challenges and inspiring courage of children with Down syndrome,” she said. “As public servants and responsible citizens, it’s our duty to ensure that every child—regardless of ability—receives support in inclusive classrooms with trained educators and accessible resources.

Shaina NC further proposed the introduction of special education classes, inclusive curriculums, and trained staff in BMC schools to better serve children with intellectual differences.
