Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has announced that snake rescuers, also known as Sarpa Mitra, will soon receive official identity cards and accident insurance coverage of Rs 10 lakh. It is a major initiative of the government to support volunteers who risk their lives to rescue snakes.
The announcement was made by Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule during a high-level meeting held at the Mantralaya. The meeting was attended by Additional Chief Secretary of the Forest Department Milind Mhaiskar, State Wildlife Conservator M. Srinivas Rao, and President of the All India Snake Rescuers and Animal Rescuers Association, Prof. Sambhajirao Patil, among others.
Minister Bawankule acknowledged the vital role of snake rescuers, who frequently help rural communities by capturing and safely relocating snakes, often at great personal risk. “Recognizing their bravery and consistent service, there has been a long-standing demand to provide them with accident insurance. This initiative will ensure both their safety and formal recognition,” he said.
A comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is currently being developed to streamline the issuance of identity cards and insurance coverage. In addition, discussions are underway to designate snake rescuers as ‘frontline workers’ and to include them under essential services, with a formal recommendation to be submitted to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Highlighting the importance of transparency and accessibility, the Forest Department will soon launch a dedicated online portal containing verified information about registered snake rescuers. This will enable citizens to easily reach out for help during emergencies while promoting accountability in rescue operations.
