Mumbai: Maharashtra Congress Legislature Party Leader Vijay Wadettiwar has appealed to the Supreme Court to cancel the appointment of a former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson as a judge in the Bombay High Court.
Concerns Over Judicial Independence
Addressing the media, Wadettiwar said,“The judiciary is the last hope for the common man, but recent developments are raising serious concerns about its independence. Appointing someone who held an official political role until as recently as 2024 to a judicial post is highly questionable.”
Former BJP Role Under Scrutiny
He pointed out that the individual in question had resigned from the BJP in 2024 after serving as a party spokesperson and has now been appointed to the judiciary.
“This has sparked a debate on whether the judiciary is truly functioning independently or is being influenced by specific political ideologies,” he stated.
Cites SC Remarks on Rahul Gandhi
Wadettiwar also referred to recent controversial remarks made by the Supreme Court questioning who the “real Indian” is, in connection with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. He said such comments have the potential to shake public confidence in the judiciary.

Call for Immediate Supreme Court Intervention
“The appointment of politically affiliated individuals as judges could collapse the very foundation of our judicial system,” Wadettiwar warned. “With folded hands, I request the Hon’ble Supreme Court to cancel this appointment and refrain from making such political appointments in the future.”
Stresses Importance of Political Neutrality
Wadettiwar emphasized that political neutrality is vital to preserving the credibility and independence of the judiciary and urged the apex court to take immediate corrective action.
