Thane: Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) will implement the Chennai Pattern of waste management in the KDMC region. The project is scheduled to be inaugurated on Sunday in Kalyan. According to sources, the city has faced persistent waste management issues for several years.
KDMC has decided to adopt the Chennai Pattern, marking the first such initiative in Maharashtra and the second in the country after Chennai. Chennai's initiative to become a garbage-free city has been consistently successful, earning national recognition for its cleanliness. The Chennai Municipal Corporation has significantly transformed the city's appearance through this program.
Citizens have also actively participated in the initiative, helping Chennai achieve record levels of cleanliness over the past four years. According to civic officials, the first phase of implementation in KDMC will cover seven wards—D, E, F, G, H, I, and J—spanning Kalyan East, Dombivli, and Kalyan Rural.
Waste collection and transportation planning will be carried out by organizations such as Sumit Elkoplast, which are experienced in executing the Garbage-Free City initiative.
A KDMC official emphasized that a garbage-free city relies on three key components: waste collection, transportation, and road cleaning, all of which require strong technological and manpower support. Waste management activities will be carried out in three shifts daily, with garbage being collected from each household. Power sweeper machines will be used to clean both main and internal roads across the city.
The civic body is also launching a mobile application to address waste-related issues. Complaints received via social media and phone will be monitored and addressed promptly by the newly established Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC).
KDMC Chief Abhinav Goyal stated that this is Maharashtra’s first Garbage-Free City initiative, launched under the lines of the Chennai model. He added that the initiative is expected to receive a positive and spontaneous response from the citizens once implemented.
