Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable Chetan Singh who allegedly shot dead his senior and three passengers on board a Jaipur-Mumbai train hid is medical condition, according the railway ministry said on Wednesday.

"The treatment for the present medical ailment would have been taken on his personal level by Chetan Singh, and is not in his official records. He and his family have kept it a secret. The matter is under investigation with GRP Borivali," the Ministry of Railways said in a statement.

Alleged mental condition and medical examination

Sources had earlier said that Singh (33) was diagnosed with serious anxiety disorder and suffered from "abnormal hallucinations".

"In this regard, it is stated that there is system of Periodical Medical Examination (PME) of Railway Protection Force constables, and in the last PME, no such medical ailment/ condition was detected," it said.

"The treatment for the present medical ailment would have been taken on his personal level by Chetan Singh, and is not in his official records. He and his family have kept it a secret. The matter is under investigation with GRP Borivali," the statement said.

In this regard, the railway ministry clarified on Wednesday that there is system of Periodical Medical Examination (PME) of Railway Protection Force constables, and in the last PME, no such medical ailment or condition was detected.

How the shooting unfolded

On Monday, Singh allegedly shot dead his senior ASI Tika Ram Meena and three passengers aboard the Jaipur-Mumbai Central Superfast Express. The shooting happened at Vaitarna railway station at around 5:23 am when Singh was on duty. He used his service ARM rifle (AK-47) to carry out the attack in the B-5 coach of the train. He was later apprehended and handed over to the Borivali police.

"To address the incident thoroughly, a high-level committee headed by ADG/RPF has been formed to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the matter. The authorities are working to uncover the motives behind the tragic event and understand the circumstances that led to this shocking act of violence" said an official.
