Mumbai: A Mumbai court on Friday remanded a man held in the Pune ISIS arms and explosives seizure case in National Investigation Agency (NIA) custody till July 18 after the agency obtained his custody from a Lucknow court.

Rizwan Ali was in judicial custody in UP in an Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) being probed by the Anti Terrorism Squad there. He is also facing trial in a National Investigation Agency case in Delhi.

It was submitted before the court that Ali was primarily arrested in a case lodged in Delhi and later by ATS in Lucknow. Since, Ali was a wanted accused in the case lodged in Mumbai for being part of ISIS’s Pune module, he has now been arrested in the said case.

The NIA prosecutor Sunil Gonsalves while seeking his custody had submitted that Ali along with other accused had done recce in various forest areas of Pune, Satara, Lonawala, etc where they suspected to have done practice for firing as well as blast.

Besides, the agency also suspects that they had done recce using drones at vital installations. The probe agency claimed he was allegedly part of a larger conspiracy to promote the terror activities of the outfit.

Rizwan’s lawyer Junaid Shaikh opposed the remand saying that he has no connection with the co-accused in the case. Shaikh contended that he has already been interrogated by other agencies. Hence there is no need for further interrogation. The court after hearing both the sides remanded the accused to NIA custody till July 18.

The NIA has so far arrested about a dozen persons in the July 2023 case relating to seizure of arms, explosives, chemicals and ISIS-related literature.

As per the NIA, all the accused were involved in the plans to unleash terror in and around Pune as part of a larger conspiracy to promote the terror activities of the outfit.

The accused were in touch with their foreign-based handler via secret communication apps, the NIA earlier said. They were also raising terror funds by carrying out armed robberies and thefts and were also receiving money from their handlers, as per the NIA.
