In a move to emphasize the importance of cleanliness and hygiene, Indian Railways has terminated the services of an on-board housekeeping contractual employee for littering from a moving train.

The incident came to light after a video surfaced on social media, showing the employee, Kanchan Lal, disposing of garbage onto the tracks from train number 04115, the SubedarGanj-Lokmanya Tilak Special, on February 28.

A thorough investigation was conducted by the Indian Railways, which found the housekeeping service provider in violation of contract clause 9. Consequently, the Prayagraj division imposed a fine of ₹25,000 on the contractor and issued a stern warning regarding future conduct.

The company stated that Kanchan Lal had been instructed not to dispose of waste onto the tracks, but he neglected these directives. Following the incident's exposure on social media, he was relieved from his duties.

In response to the incident, the Railways have directed all onboard housekeeping service providers to train their staff against improper waste disposal. Employees will be equipped with large bags to collect waste, which should then be deposited at designated stations or at the train's terminating station.

"The termination of service is aimed at sending a strong message against littering and promoting cleanliness among railway staff and passengers. The railways have been taking various measures to maintain cleanliness, including fines for littering and awareness campaigns. "said an official.
