Mumbai: Shiv Sena leader from Shinde faction Sanjay Nirupam has stirred controversy after alleging that several areas in Mumbai are witnessing what he termed as 'housing jihad.' He claimed that certain redevelopment projects, allegedly led by Muslim builders, are replacing Hindu residents with Muslim occupants, which he says could alter the city's demographic fabric.
Allegations and Demand for Investigation
Speaking to reporters, Nirupam said, “It is not just about one case. ‘Housing jihad’ is taking place in many areas. Many Muslim builders are taking up redevelopment projects, replacing Hindu residents or buying their flats and allotting them to Muslims.”
He urged the Maharashtra government to launch a probe into what he described as a growing trend. “I demand that the government investigate all Muslim builders. Houses have no caste or religion, but unfortunately, the situation has reached a point where we are forced to make this demand to protect Mumbai's identity,” he added.
Hindus May Become a Minority
In his remarks, Nirupam warned of what he believes could be long-term demographic changes. “If we do not pay attention to this, the demography of Mumbai will change, and Hindus may become a minority here,” he stated.
As of now, neither the state government nor the housing regulatory authorities have responded to Nirupam’s demand.
