Mumbai: With the initiative to build a smoother travel experience for Mumbaikars, the Indian Railways has launched several projects exceeding Rs 16,200 crore focused on upgrading the Mumbai Suburban Railway Network, responding to the urgent requirement for better infrastructure.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that these advancements are essential for relieving congestion on current lines, boosting service frequency, and addressing the needs of suburban commuters in Mumbai.
The government has sanctioned 12 infrastructure initiatives worth Rs 16,241 crore, reinforcing Indian Railways' dedication to modernisation and enhanced regional connectivity. The projects, each accompanied by their respective costs and durations, comprise:
CSMT-Kurla Lines 5 and 6 (17.5 km, Rs 891 crores)
Mumbai Central-Borivali Sixth Line (30 km, ₹919 crore)
Harbour Line expansion from Goregaon to Borivali (7 km, Rs 826 crore)
Borivali-Virar 5th and 6th Line (26 km, ₹2,184 crore)
Virar-Dahanu Road 3rd & 4th Line (64 km, ₹3,587 crore)
Panvel-Karjat Suburban Route (29.6 km, ₹2,782 crore)
Airoli-Kalwa Elevated Suburban Corridor connection (3.3 km, Rs 476 crore)
Kalyan-Asangaon Fourth Line (32 km, ₹1,759 crore)
Kalyan-Badlapur 3rd and 4th Line (14 km, ₹1,510 crore)
Kalyan-Kasara 3rd Line (67 km, ₹793 crore)
Naigaon-Juichandra double track Line (6 km, Rs 176 crore)
Nilaje-Kopar double track Line (5 km, Rs 338 crore)
Furthermore, Indian Railways intends to launch 238 new air-conditioned local trains equipped with automatic doors that improve commuter safety by reducing incidents caused by overcrowding.
