Mumbai: Uddhav and Raj Thackeray, once distant cousins, are coming together to challenge the Maharashtra government's choice to implement Hindi as a compulsory language for Classes 1 to 5 according to the National Education Policy (NEP). They perceive this action as an infringement on local identity and language variety. Uddhav’s Shiv Sena (UBT) and Raj’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) are set to conduct a unified protest march on July 5, representing their first joint endeavour in twenty years.
Sanjay Raut, spokesperson for Shiv Sena (UBT), affirmed the collective position through a post on X, emphasizing the significance of this collaborative effort against the implementation of Hindi in state schools. At first, the two leaders intended to hold distinct protests. Raj Thackeray declared a 'Virat Morcha' for July 6, while Uddhav backed a demonstration for July 7.
After discussions initiated by Raut post their press conferences, they agreed to consolidate their protests into one event, highlighting the importance of a united Marathi front.
MNS chief Sandeep Deshpande conveyed hope regarding the collective demonstration, implying it might transform Maharashtra's political scenario and showcase the power of the Marathi populace. After the announcement, leaders from both sides convened to talk about plans for organizing the protest.
In reaction, officials from the ruling Shiv Sena under Eknath Shinde and the BJP condemned the Thackeray cousins for what they called political theatrics before the forthcoming civic body elections.

They explained that although Hindi will not be required, Marathi is obligatory in all schools, stating that multiple language choices, including Hindi, are offered without enforced requirement. The Maharashtra government's previous choice to add Hindi drew criticism from various groups, preparing for the expected rally on July 5 in Worli, Mumbai.
