Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday stated that he has directed the state cyber department to contact the online encyclopedia 'Wikipedia' and ensure the removal of objectionable content against Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.

Speaking to reporters in Mumbai, Fadnavis said, "We strongly condemn the kind of statements written against Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj on Wikipedia. We have instructed our cyber department officials to take necessary action and communicate with the relevant authorities managing the platform to ensure that such misinformation is removed immediately."

The action from the Maharashtra CM comes after shocking information about the objectionable mention of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj on Wikipedia triggered outrage on social media.

Last week, Vicky Kaushal's starrer film 'Chhava' was released. The film is based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.

Because of the film, many people visited the Wikipedia page on Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj to know more about him, when they found objectionable content about him.

Several social media users highlighted the issue and demanded the content be deleted.

However, many social media users backed Wikipedia, saying the information on its platform is true. Actor and film critic Kamran Akmal in an X post shared the controversial content and said, "This is history and it is true."

On Tuesday, CM Fadnavis unveiled the equestrian statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Badlapur
