Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced a major step toward enhancing commuter safety with the introduction of AI-powered safety systems in Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) buses. Speaking at the inauguration of a smart MSRTC bus in Thane on Wednesday, Shinde emphasized that passenger safety—particularly for women—will be a top priority in the state's transport system. The newly launched buses will feature integrated artificial intelligence-based safety mechanisms aimed at ensuring a more secure and passenger-friendly travel experience. Transport Minister and MSRTC Chairman Pratap Sarnaik, along with senior MSRTC officials, attended the launch event.

Highlighting the scope of the project, the Deputy CM stated, "MSRTC serves over 5.5 million passengers daily. To make travel more secure, we are incorporating AI-based integrated safety systems into our upcoming fleet of buses. These smart buses will be equipped with driver monitoring cameras, CCTV surveillance for onboard passenger movement, Wi-Fi for entertainment, LED screens for advertising, GPS tracking, and foam-based fire suppression systems."

Shinde commended Transport Minister Sarnaik for his dedicated efforts toward this transformational initiative, saying, "His forward-thinking vision and commitment to modernizing the MSRTC system deserve special praise. The Maharashtra government will fully support these efforts to enhance public transport services."

According to MSRTC, these smart buses will feature an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), including a driver monitoring camera. These systems will provide alerts for potential collisions and lane departures and monitor driver behavior, including possible rear-end collisions. Additionally, the buses will offer 360-degree camera coverage—including front, rear, and side views (180° on each side)—to assist drivers in detecting blind spots and navigating more safely.

Inside the buses, two cameras—one front-facing and one rear-facing—will be installed to ensure passenger safety. To monitor and track passenger boarding and alighting, the buses will also be equipped with passenger counting sensors.

A Driver Assistance Screen with live camera views will help drivers make safer decisions while navigating. The Mobile NVR System with 4G and GPS tracking will enable live tracking and video recording, enhancing both safety and post-incident review capabilities.

LCD screens inside the buses will be used for advertisements and route displays, supporting communication with passengers and generating additional revenue. Three LED route display screens—located at the front, side, and rear of the bus—will ensure clear route visibility from all angles.

For effective communication with passengers, the buses will also be equipped with a passenger announcement system.

"These technological upgrades represent a major step forward in transforming public transportation in Maharashtra, combining safety, innovation, and convenience for both drivers and passengers," said an MSRTC official.
