Key Features Of 'Sindoor Flyover'

Sindoor Flyover, strategically located near Masjid Bunder railway station, links P D’Mello Road to key commercial areas such as Crawford Market, Kalbadevi, and Mohammad Ali Road. Developed by the BMC after the 150-year-old Carnac Bridge was dismantled in August 2022 due to safety concerns, the project was expedited under additional municipal commissioner Abhijit Bangar, with completion achieved by June 10.

The bridge spans 328 meters, incorporating 70 meters within railway premises and 230 meters of approach roads, with construction using two steel girders, each weighing 550 metric tonnes. The southern girder was installed on October 19, 2024, while the northern girder was placed on January 26 and 30, 2025, amid controlled railway traffic blocks.

This phase involved aligning and securing the girders, requiring precision from a height of 8–9 meters. Sindoor Flyover is anticipated to alleviate congestion at critical junctions, enhance east-west commuter routes, and improve access to various local streets.

The construction has passed load testing and received all necessary safety certifications. The inauguration ceremony will feature prominent local officials, including IT and cultural affairs minister Ashish Shelar and municipal commissioner Bhushan Gagrani.
