Mumbai: The Bombay High Court has granted anticipatory bail to a law student accused of inflicting burn injuries on her roommate during a quarrel over keeping their room door open.
The incident took place on April 25, 2025, around 2.50 pm when a dispute broke out between the two women, who were sharing rented accommodation in Pune. According to the prosecution, the applicant allegedly refused to shut the door, stating she was sleeping. The argument escalated, and the applicant is accused of burning the informant on her left shoulder, hand, and thigh using a hot iron, and also scratching her with nails.
The law student had earlier sought pre-arrest bail from the Sessions Court in Pune, which was denied, citing a prima facie case against her. The Medical Officer referred the roommate for the opinion by expert for surgery, ortho and plastic surgery.
However, while granting relief, the High Court noted that the injuries had not yet been medically certified as grievous. “The Investigating Officer has not collected the medical certificate from the Medical Officer as to whether the injuries suffered by the informant are grievous in nature or not,” the court observed.
The court further noted that the incident appeared to have occurred over a “trifle” issue. It also considered the fact that the applicant is a law student with no prior criminal record and that custodial interrogation is not necessary at this stage. “Investigation is on the verge of completion and a charge sheet will be filed within two weeks,” the court was informed.
Granting bail, the court directed that “in the event of arrest, the applicant be released on bail on executing a personal bond of Rs 50,000 with one or two sureties.” The applicant has also been directed to cooperate with the investigation and not to tamper with evidence or influence witnesses.
