Mumbai: After overcoming multiple challenges and causing inconvenience to daily commuters, key infrastructure projects in Mumbai are now set to open just in time for the monsoon season.
The Carnac Bunder, Andheri’s Gokhale Bridge, and the Vikhroli connector are all in the final stages of completion, offering much-needed relief to the city's traffic woes. Moreover, the construction of 13 additional bridges is underway, with some expected to finish by March 2025.
Following the recommendations of structural auditors, the civic body has undertaken the removal and reconstruction of dilapidated bridges, along with major and minor structural repairs over the past few years. Notable completed projects in 2024-25 include a flyover at Mith Chowky Junction and a bridge at Shri Krishna Nagar in Borivali.
To accelerate progress of other bridges, the BMC has allocated Rs. 1,980 crore for bridge projects in the 2025-26 financial year. A senior civic official remarked, "Though delayed, we have set a tight deadline, made provisions, and are conducting regular follow-ups to ensure that the Carnac Bunder, Vikhroli, and Gokhale bridges are completed before the monsoon."
Additionally, the flyover at Valbhatt Nalla under the Mrunaltai Gore Flyover in Goregaon West, along with a new bridge from Bandra East to Dharavi Sion on the Mithi River, is expected to be completed by next month.
Moreover, the reconstruction of bridges at Ghatkopar and Vikhroli Railway Stations, Tilak Bridge in Dadar, Reay Road Railway Line Bridge, and Byculla (East) Bridge is underway through the BMC-appointed agency MRIDCL, a joint venture between the Maharashtra State Government and the Ministry of Railways.
The civic team, under expert supervision, recently completed the technically challenging task of shifting and moving the northern steel girder of the Carnac Bunder, a vital connector in South Mumbai. Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagarani felicitated the engineers who played a crucial role in coordinating with the railway administration for the project. The team included Deputy Chief Engineer Rajesh Mule, Executive Engineer (Retd.) Sakharam Jadhav, Assistant Engineer Kunal Vaidhya, and Junior Engineer Abhishek Deolkar.
