In an unprecedented development in the state's political history, several office-bearers of the NCP have come under police scrutiny. A total of 45 office-bearers from the now-dissolved Beed district unit of the NCP are under investigation and have been frequenting the police station following the brutal murder of sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who is also the president of the NCP, decided to dissolve the party’s Beed unit on Tuesday. The FPJ broke the story in its Wednesday edition.

The decision by Pawar, sources say, followed after the inputs provided to him by the local leaders. The NCP has begun overhauling the party organisation in Beed where it has three MLAs and presence in almost every part of the district.

The 45 office-bearers owe their allegiance to minister Dhananjay Munde who is in the eye of a storm over the ghastly killing of the Massajog sarpanch. Meanwhile, after reaching Parli in the wee hours, Munde has avoided public appearance and is said to be closeted with his trusted lieutenants to chalk out the future course.

The Beed police team investigating the murder had summoned 40-45 office-bearers and asked them about the chain of events before the killing took place on December 9, sources said. The information provided by them appeared to have given clues about the events that preceded the murder. It's not just the junior office-be arers but even the president of the Beed NCP Rajeshwar Chavan was also summoned by the police and faced questions.

Most of the office-bearers in Beed were appointed at the recommendation of Munde and many of them are close to the leader, said an office bearer of the state unit of the NCP.
