With the unfolding of suspended DCP Saurabh Tripathi’s involvement in the extortion of money from angadias by threatening income tax raids, the Maharashtra government will constitute an inquiry into whether the state administrative agencies are involved in defaming the Central agencies.

This was announced by state home minister Dilip Walse Patil on Wednesday in the state assembly after BJP legislator Ashish Shelar raised the issue. Saurabh Tripathi, an IPS officer in the state police force, was suspended after it was revealed that he pretended to be an income tax officer recovering money from angadias. Shelar asked, “Is there any conspiracy being hatched by the state administrative departments to malign the Central administrative departments? Are there any other officers like Tripathi who are involved in such recoveries? Is there anyone supporting them?”

He said if that is the case, then surely it brings discredit to Maharashtra and the country. “This is a serious matter and the government must immediately take note of it and, if necessary, also institute an inquiry into the same,” he demanded
