Mumbai: The mortal remains of Aparna Mahadik, one of the ten crew members aboard the ill-fated Air India flight AI171 that crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12, reached Mumbai on Tuesday evening. Her body arrived around 7:30 pm and was received with deep sorrow by grieving family members, friends and well-wishers at her residence in Goregaon.
Who Was Aparna Mahadik?
Aparna Mahadik, aged 42, was a senior cabin crew member and a close relative of Maharashtra NCP chief and Raigad MP Sunil Tatkare. She was the daughter-in-law of Tatkare’s younger sister. Several political dignitaries, including Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar, MLAs Pravin Darekar and Yogesh Kadam, visited her Goregaon residence to offer their condolences before her last rites were conducted at a crematorium in Aarey Colony around 9 pm.
Mahadik is survived by her husband, Amol Mahadik, who is also employed with Air India as a cabin crew member and their nine-year-old daughter. Amol was in Delhi at the time of the crash.
Her passing is one of many tragedies resulting from the crash of the London-bound Air India flight AI171. The aircraft, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, had taken off from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport carrying 242 people, including 10 crew members. Moments after takeoff, the aircraft crashed into a nearby medical complex, killing 241 on board and 29 on the ground. Only one passenger miraculously survived and is currently hospitalised.

2 More Funerals Including Captain Sumeet Sabharwal's Held In City
Earlier in the day, the last rites of Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, the pilot-in-command of the doomed flight and fellow crew member Maithili Patil, were also held. Captain Sabharwal’s funeral took place at an electric crematorium in Chakala, while Patil was cremated in her hometown in Raigad district.
Captain Sabharwal’s remains were transported to his Powai residence at Jal Vayu Vihar, where emotional scenes unfolded. Businessman Niranjan Hiranandani and local MLA Dilip Lande were among the many who paid their respects. His elderly father Pushkaraj Sabharwal, a retired DGCA official, offered a heart-wrenching tribute to his son with folded hands, unable to hold back his tears.
