The film Aata Thambaycha Nay, which portrays the struggles and unwavering spirit of BMC’s Class IV employees, was officially released on Thursday. Prior to its release, a special screening was held at Metro Cinema near the BMC headquarters, attended by BMC Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani, who watched the film alongside civic staff.
Additional Municipal Commissioner (Eastern Suburbs) Dr. Amit Saini, Deputy Commissioner (Solid Waste Management) Kiran Dighavkar, celebrated director and actor Ashutosh Gowariker, and the film’s writer and director, Shivraj Vyachal, were also present during the special screening. "I was rendered speechless after watching it,” said Dr. Saini, visibly moved by the portrayal. Based on a true story, the film was viewed by over a thousand Class IV employees of the BMC on its opening day, on May 1.
Driven by the mission “Clean Mumbai, Beautiful Mumbai,” conservancy workers, water supply engineers, and stormwater workers work tirelessly around the clock. While dutifully serving the city, they quietly pursue personal dreams. The film brings to life the inspiring journey of these unsung heroes—whose lives change through the initiative of a committed officer, Uday Shirurkar, now retired. "The film offers a powerful glimpse into the lives of BMC workers, highlighting the challenges of a growing city and the transformative power of education. It tells the inspiring story of employees who, despite hardships, complete their education through night school—encouraged by a dedicated officer and a guiding teacher. During his tenure as Assistant Municipal Commissioner of 'B' Ward, Shirurkar motivated Class IV civic employees—sweepers, manhole cleaners, and road and pipeline repairmen, many earning less than Rs 6,000 a month—to pursue education. His initiative led 23 of these workers to complete their SSC (Secondary School Certificate) exams in 2017, years after they had dropped out of school. Their inspiring journey even caught the attention of filmmakers.
