World Malaria Day is observed every year on April 25 with the aim of spreading awareness about malaria disease. The day also aims to raise awareness about diseases and their prevention in the world. Malaria is a potentially life-threatening infectious disease that is caused by parasitic protozoa of the genus Plasmodium, which is transmitted to humans through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes, especially in tropical and subtropical regions.

World Malaria Day 2025

Malaria significantly impacts people, causing a range of health problems from mild illness to death; according to WHO, this severe disease is causing death in numerous developing countries, particularly in Africa, where young children are most vulnerable. World Malaria Day 2025 reminds people of the challenges associated with this disease and the efforts made to eliminate it.

Malaria symptoms

The symptoms of malaria typically develop within 10 days to four weeks following the infection. In some cases, symptoms may not develop for several months. Some malarial parasites can enter the body but remain dormant for long periods. The symptoms of malaria can vary in severity, ranging from mild to life-threatening. Early symptoms of this disease include fever, fluctuations in body temperature, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, and nausea. Severe malaria can lead to complications like anemia, respiratory distress, seizures, cerebral malaria (brain damage), coma, and organ failure, potentially leading to death.

World Malaria Day 2025 Theme

This year, the theme of World Malaria Day is "Malaria Ends with Us: Reinvest, Reimagine, Reignite." This year's theme aims to motivate people to invest more and stay committed to fighting malaria.

History of World Malaria Day

In 2007, World Malaria Day was observed for the first time. The significance day was introduced by the World Health Assembly, which is governed by WHO and has the goal of spreading awareness about the fight against malaria. Before this, Africa Malaria Day had been observed. World Malaria Day is observed to highlight the need for continued investment and sustained political commitment to malaria prevention and control.
