India’s very own desi girl Priyanka Chopra Jonas is once again making headlines, but this time, it’s not for her red-carpet appearance or her Hollywood success. The global icon is currently receiving mixed reactions online for a rather unexpected reason: her current food preferences.
Priyanka's food choice sparks internet drama
At the red carpet premiere of her new action-comedy film Heads of State, now streaming on Prime Video alongside John Cena and Idris Elba, Priyanka took part in a fun "This or That" segment. The rapid-fire round asked her to choose between global dishes, and it’s what she picked that has sparked a mini culinary controversy online.
When asked to choose between empanadas and samosas, she thoughtfully said, "Depends on the mood." When it came to enchiladas vs chicken tikka masala, she replied, "Both."
But the moment that triggered Desi hearts everywhere was when she was asked to choose between vada pav and hot dogs. Without hesitation, Priyanka stated, "I love a vada pav, but hot dog is my weakness."
Indian fans react: 'She's not our desi girl anymore'
That one line was enough to create a stir across social media. While some laughed it off, others didn't hold back their disappointment. A user wrote, "She’s not our ‘Desi girl’ anymore. She’s ‘pardesi girl’ now."
Other statements noted, “Who chooses Hot dog over Vada pav, absolute blasphemy,” and “Even if I were not an Indian, I would pick samosa. I mean, have you met a samosa?!”
The trolling escalated on X (formerly Twitter), where one user went all in: "I never liked Priyanka Chopra – wannabe Bollywood star trying way too hard to be American. Seriously, a hot dog over VADA PAV. Even white people would pick vada pav over a processed, lowest on the food chain, slimy gross hot dog."
But not everyone’s offended
Fortunately, there were plenty of voices defending her as well, calling out the overreaction: "I hope people getting offended by her food choices are the ones who only eat desi food and never choose eating fries over homemade dal chawal.”
“Priyanka Chopra travels around the WORLD, to multiple countries in a year for her work. She probably tastes 100s of dishes... why is it so wrong to like any dish from another country more than one from your own?” a user on X expressed.
