In an extraordinary tale of ambition and authenticity, Urmimala Boruah and her daughter Snigdha Baruah have carved a place for themselves and for Assam-on the international stage. Representing India at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, this remarkable mother-daughter duo from a small village in Dibrugarh, Assam, brought not just their talent but also their culture, grace, and unbreakable spirit to the global spotlight. With their unique outfits, they stole the limelight at the film festival.

A journey rooted in dreams and determination

Hailing from humble beginnings, Urmimala Boruah, a filmmaker and pageant director, has spent years advocating for the representation of Northeast Indian culture on major platforms. Having walked the red carpet at Cannes in 2024 with two models, she returned this year with a powerful ensemble of 10 participants, including her daughter Snigdha, who is also and emerging actor.

For the duo, this appearance wasn't just a personal milestone-it marked a historic moment as the first representatives from Assam to participate at Cannes, supported by the Assam government. Standing hand-in-hand amid flashing cameras and global media, their presence sent a message of pride and cultural identity.

Fashion as cultural storytelling

Much of the media attention was drawn to their distinctive outfits, designed by renowned artist Phan Huy. Urmimala’s ensemble, inspired by the ancient banyan tree, symbolised motherhood, endurance, and interconnectedness-traits she embodies as a nurturer both at home and in her creative work. The gown was detailed with abstract representations of the insects and life forms that depend on the banyan, reflecting the symbiotic relationship between nature and humanity.

Snigdha’s gown, equally captivating, drew from the motif of an Asian hand fan-a tribute to the rich, diverse cultures that form the fabric of Asia. With bold textures and fluid designs, her attire served as a metaphor for youthful spirit and reverence for one’s heritage.

An Assamese story told on the global stage

Currently, the duo is collaborating on their short film titled "Dibrugarh: A Cultural Journey". Set against the tranquil and scenic backdrop of the Brahmaputra River, the film offers a poignant look into the everyday lives of Assamese people, centering on the journey of a tea gardener. It explores themes of resilience, tradition, and the socio-cultural fabric of rural Assam. "This is more than a film-it’s our homage to Assam," says Urmimala. "We want the world to see the strength, struggles, and spirit of our people."

Empowering the next generation

Beyond her creative ventures, Urmimala has become a role model for aspiring artists and filmmakers across rural India. By breaking through industry barriers, she’s helped open doors for voices that often go unheard. Her daughter Snigdha, following in her footsteps, began her acting training in their village and now dreams of bringing authentic regional stories to the screen.

More than just a red carpet moment

Urmimala Boruah and Snigdha Baruah’s Cannes appearance is not merely about fashion or fame. It’s a cultural statement-a celebration of Assam’s heritage, and a message that rural India has stories worth telling. With every step they took on that red carpet, they honored their roots and inspired countless others to believe in their dreams.
