Obesity has emerged as a global health crisis, affecting millions of people and leading to severe medical conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. While dietary habits and physical activity levels play a significant role in obesity, one often-overlooked contributor is excessive cooking oil consumption.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently addressed this issue, urging Indians to reduce their oil intake. His remarks have sparked a conversation, with several Indian celebrities, including R. Madhavan and Akshay Kumar, stepping forward to support his message and share their own tips on combating obesity.
R. Madhavan's take on obesity
Today (February 21), R. Madhavan took to X (formerly Twitter) to support PM Modi’s initiative. In a video message, he emphasised the growing concern surrounding obesity and the importance of spreading awareness.
His statement in the video noted, "Obesity is a serious issue, and it's beginning to seriously impact our part of the world, too, in an alarming way. And it's great to see our Prime Minister addressing it and raising awareness about something that's likely to affect us all."

Madhavan's tips to tackle obesity
Madhavan also shared practical tips for leading a healthier lifestyle, stressing the importance of small, sustainable changes rather than extreme dieting. The actor encouraged the youth to set an example by making fitness and healthy eating a priority.
"Our youth are leading the way, prioritising fitness and healthy eating. Small changes matter. Swap unhealthy drinks for water. Take a walk. No extreme diets, just sustainable habits," he shared.
His video message concluded with, "Let's create a supportive environment at school, work, and in our communities. With our youth's energy, we can all be inspired. Let's move more, eat better, and build a healthier future together. A healthier India starts with us. Jai Hind."

PM Modi’s message on obesity
During the opening ceremony of the 38th National Games, PM Modi specifically highlighted the role of excessive oil consumption in rising obesity levels. He pointed out that obesity is not limited to older adults but is increasingly affecting the younger generation as well.
"Every age group of the country, and even the youth, are being badly affected by it. And this is also a matter of concern because obesity increases the risk of diseases like diabetes and heart disease," PM stated.
To combat this, he urged families to make practical reductions in their oil consumption. He suggested a simple yet effective approach: "In our homes, ration comes at the beginning of the month. Till now, if you used to bring home two litres of cooking oil every month, then reduce it by at least 10%. Reduce the amount of oil we use every day by 10%."
Akshay Kumar's advice against obesity
Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar also applauded PM Modi’s initiative. Sharing an old video of the PM highlighting the importance of a healthy lifestyle, the actor wrote on X, "How true!! I’ve been saying this for years now... love it that the PM himself has put it so aptly. Health hai toh sab kuchh hai. Obesity se fight karne ke sabse bade hathiyaar."
Sharing his tips, Akshay explained, "Enough sleep. Fresh air and sunlight. No processed food, less oil. Trust the good old desi ghee, and most importantly… Move, move, move. Kuchh bhi type ka workout karo par karo toh sahi. Regular exercise will change your life. Trust me on this and get moving."

What is obesity?
Obesity is characterised by excessive fat accumulation, which leads to serious health risks. It can result from overeating, sedentary lifestyles, and poor nutritional choices. However, one of the factors that often goes unnoticed is the high consumption of cooking oil. This everyday ingredient, when used excessively, can significantly contribute to weight gain and associated health issues.
