At 74, Prime Minister Narendra Modi continues to inspire with his remarkable energy and disciplined lifestyle. A significant factor behind his vitality is his long-standing fasting practice, which he has adhered to for over five decades. In a conversation with US-based podcaster and AI researcher Lex Fridman, Modi opened up about his fasting habits and their impact on his health and daily routine.

Chaturmas- Four month fasting tradition

One of the most important fasting periods in Modi’s life is Chaturmas, an ancient Indian practice observed for four months, typically from mid-June to after Diwali. During this time, he restricts himself to just one meal per day. Modi explained that digestion naturally slows down during the monsoon season, and fasting helps maintain overall well-being.

Navratri: Nine days of fasting

Modi also observes strict fasting during Navratri, abstaining from all solid food and consuming only hot water for the entire nine-day period. “Drinking hot water has been a lifelong habit for me, and my body has adapted to it over the years,” he shared. His approach to fasting extends beyond just dietary restrictions; it is a deeply spiritual and disciplined practice.

In addition to his monsoon fasting, Modi follows the Chaitra Navratri fasting period in March or April. During this time, he consumes only one type of fruit, once a day, for the entire nine-day duration. “If I choose papaya, then for all nine days, I will eat only papaya and nothing else,” he explained. This practice emphasises simplicity, self-restraint, and a mindful approach to nutrition.

Benefits of fasting

Discussing the benefits of fasting, Modi highlighted how the practice sharpens the senses. “When you fast, you become more aware of smells, tastes, and touch,” he noted. Rather than feeling weakened by fasting, he believes it strengthens both the mind and spirit, making him more alert and focused.

For Modi, fasting is not merely a dietary restriction but an act of devotion and self-discipline. “It doesn’t slow me down; instead, it makes me sharper,” he asserted. He views fasting as a method to recalibrate the body, enhance willpower, and maintain inner harmony.

PM Modi’s fasting journey showcases the power of discipline and tradition in maintaining a balanced lifestyle. His approach challenges conventional views that fasting depletes energy, proving instead that it can be a means of renewal and strength.
