Rainy days in Mumbai may bring cool winds and that cosy chai-craving vibe, but they've also brought a sharp rise in malaria cases. According to the latest data from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the city has seen nearly double the number of cases of mosquito-borne illness this June compared to last year, raising serious health concerns.

Malaria cases doubled in June 2025 since last year

This June alone, Mumbai reported 884 cases of malaria, a stark increase from 443 cases registered in the same month in 2024. While no fatalities have been reported so far, doctors and public health officials are on alert as the city faces an influx of patients in both government and private hospitals battling not just malaria, but also dengue and chikungunya.

"The early monsoon arrival on May 26, combined with poor drainage, waterlogging, and ongoing construction, has created the perfect storm for mosquito breeding," explained Dr Himlata Arora, Consultant Physician at Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital.

"Most malaria cases are vivax malaria, which fortunately is responding well to treatment. However, dengue and chikungunya are also on the rise," he stated.

How to protect yourself from Malaria and other mosquito-borne illnesses

Health experts recommend stepping up personal and home protection measures immediately. Here's a quick guide to keep yourself and your loved ones safe:

Use Insecticide-Treated Bed Nets (ITNs)

Opt for long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) that provide extended protection from the mosquitos. Ensure nets are intact and cover the entire sleeping area for better protection.

Apply Mosquito Repellents

Use repellents registered with the EPA containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Apply on exposed skin and clothing. Reapply after sweating or swimming.

Wear Protective Clothing

Choose long-sleeved shirts, pants, and socks, especially during dawn and dusk. Light-coloured clothes are recommended, as dark colours attract mosquitoes. For extra protection, consider treating clothing with permethrin.

Safeguard Your Home

Install screens on windows and doors to block mosquito entry. Use indoor mosquito repellents like coils, vapourisers, or plug-ins safely. Bed canopies treated with insecticides are especially helpful for infants and children.

Eliminate Breeding Sites

Remove stagnant water from flower pots, buckets, bird baths, and coolers to eliminate mosquito breeding. Clean gutters regularly and ensure proper drainage to prevent the risk. Lastly, cover or empty outdoor containers that can collect rainwater.
