The 2025 budget, presented by finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, had something for everyone-tax relief for some, a push for science and development for others. However, for Bihar, it was particularly noteworthy due to several key initiatives.

One major highlight was the announcement of a dedicated "Makhana Board" in Bihar. Sitharaman stated, “The board will provide hand-holding and training support to makhana farmers and will also work to ensure they receive the benefits of all relevant government schemes.” This initiative aims to improve production, processing, value addition, and marketing of makhana.

Bihar dominates the makhana industry, supplying 80 per cent of India’s total production. Yet, despite its superfood status and rising global demand, the industry has faced challenges in maximising its potential.

A superfood on the rise

Makhana’s popularity has surged in recent years. Once limited to Indian kitchens, it has now found a growing consumer base abroad. Industry insiders report increasing demand from markets in the US, Canada, and Australia, with the US leading as the largest consumer.

India is the world’s largest exporter of makhana, and the numbers prove it. In the fiscal year 2023-2024, the country exported approximately 25,130 metric tons of makhana. With the introduction of the Makhana Board, experts anticipate even greater growth in exports.

What is Mithila Makhana & why is it special?

The Indian government recognised the value of makhana by awarding the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag to Mithila Makhana in 2022. This status protects the name from misuse, enhances its market value, and ensures fair earnings for farmers.

Mithila Makhana is special not just because of where it is grown but also because of how it is cultivated. The flood-prone lands of Mithila and parts of Nepal provide ideal conditions, and farmers have preserved age-old techniques passed down through generations. Rich in protein, magnesium, calcium, and iron, makhana is more than just a healthy snack0it holds deep cultural significance, especially in rituals like Kojagara Puja.

Benefits of Makhana

Makhana is a powerhouse of nutrients, making it an excellent choice for health-conscious consumers. It is rich in protein, calcium, and antioxidants, which contribute to strong bones, improved digestion, and better heart health. The presence of magnesium and potassium helps regulate blood pressure, while its low glycemic index makes it a great snack for diabetics. Additionally, makhana is known for its anti-aging properties and ability to promote weight management due to its low-calorie content.

These health benefits, combined with its crunchy texture and versatility, have contributed to its rising popularity worldwide.
