A spectacular celestial event is coming this September-one that promises to leave stargazers spellbound. On the night of 7–8 September 2025, a rare total lunar eclipse will bathe the full moon in a deep red hue, creating what’s famously called a “Blood Moon.” Best of all, no telescope or special equipment is needed-just clear skies and a good view of the horizon.

What makes this eclipse special?

This is the second total lunar eclipse of 2025 and will coincide with the Harvest Moon, the full moon closest to the autumn equinox. The timing is just days before the moon reaches perigee-its closest point to Earth-so it will appear slightly larger and brighter than usual before slipping into Earth’s shadow.

Lunar eclipses occur when our planet positions itself directly between the sun and the moon, blocking sunlight and casting a shadow over the lunar surface. During totality, scattered sunlight refracts through Earth’s atmosphere, painting the moon in shades of red and orange.

Will it be visible from India?

NASA confirms that the eclipse will unfold over Asia, Australia, and parts of Europe, offering excellent viewing opportunities to millions.

Eclipse Timeline (UTC): Begins at 15:28, ends at 20:55

Totality (UTC): 17:30 to 18:52 (about 82 minutes)

In India, skywatchers can enjoy the dramatic full-red phase from 11:00 p.m. to 12:22 a.m. IST. For the full experience, step outside 75 minutes earlier to see the moon entering Earth’s shadow.

Other countries with prime visibility include China, Thailand, Japan, Iran, and Western Australia. In eastern European cities such as Berlin, Vienna, and Budapest, the moon will rise already partially eclipsed.

A global spectacle for billions

This September’s lunar eclipse could be visible to over 6.2 billion people-around 77% of the global population-making it one of the most widely seen in history. For comparison, the March 2025 eclipse reached just over 1 billion viewers.

Tips for the best viewing experience

1. Find a dark, open space away from city lights.

2. Use binoculars for close-up details, though the eclipse is fully visible to the naked eye.

3. Check weather forecasts in advance for clear skies.

4. For photography, use a tripod and slow shutter speed to capture the moon’s colors.

5. So mark your calendars-the night sky on 7–8 September 2025 will put on a show you’ll remember for years.
