WWE superstar and Hollywood actor John Cena has faced countless opponents in the ring, but his recent revelation brought attention to a different kind of battle-one that hit far closer to home: skin cancer. In an interview with People magazine, Cena opened up about his diagnosis, how it changed his mindset, and why he now treats sun protection as an everyday priority.

Cena shared that he had never been one to use sunscreen. “I never used sunscreen-ever,” he admitted. It wasn’t until a routine dermatologist visit that the reality hit. A suspicious spot on his right pectoral muscle turned out to be cancerous. “I was lucky,” Cena said, acknowledging how the discovery could have taken a darker turn if it had gone unnoticed.

Receiving that first call from his doctor was a jarring moment. “It’s the kind of call you never want to get,” Cena said, recalling the uncertainty and fear it brought. Now, those scars serve as daily reminders for him. “I’m in a place in life where protecting my health is a priority. And sunscreen? That’s non-negotiable now.”

Skin cancer doesn’t discriminate

John Cena’s diagnosis is a stark reminder that skin cancer can affect anyone -regardless of fame, gender, or fitness level. Prolonged sun exposure, especially without adequate protection, can lead to serious consequences over time. Cena, known for spending long hours outdoors during training and performances, is now urging fans to prioritise their skin health.

Why sunscreen should be an everyday habit?

Many people associate sunscreen with beach days or summer vacations, but dermatologists emphasise that UV rays are present all year round-even on cloudy or cold days. Applying sunscreen daily, especially to exposed areas like the face, neck, and hands, significantly reduces the risk of skin damage and long-term issues like cancer, premature aging, and sunspots.

Choosing the right sunscreen

Experts recommend using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Water-resistant formulas are ideal for active lifestyles, and those with sensitive skin should opt for mineral-based sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Reapplying every two hours-and after sweating or swimming-is key for effective protection.
