The revered Tibetan spiritual leader, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, marked the start of his 90th birthday festivities according to the Tibetan lunar calendar. The celebrations commenced at the Tsuglagkhang temple complex in McLeodganj, near Dharamshala, drawing devotees, dignitaries, and international admirers.

While the Dalai Lama’s birthday is widely recognised on July 6 in the Gregorian calendar, Tibetan tradition observes it on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. This year, that date fell on June 30, prompting an early start to the commemorations.

The Domey community, representing people from Amdo-the Tibetan region where the Dalai Lama was born-organised a series of cultural and religious programs to honor their spiritual leader.

Ceremonial offerings and prayers

Devotees thronged the Tsuglagkhang temple, carrying colorful ceremonial offerings and butter lamps. Attendant monks helped the Dalai Lama don a special ceremonial hat as he led prayers and teachings.
