Is Dakota Johnson quietly rewriting the "revenge dress" playbook in 2025? That's the question fans are asking after the Fifty Shades star made headlines in a sultry, see-through black ensemble, just as rumours of her split from long-time partner Chris Martin gain serious traction.
Take a look:
Dakota and Chris Martin breakup rumours
After nearly eight years of an on-and-off romance, Dakota, 35, and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, 48, are reportedly parting ways for good. While neither has made an official statement, eagle-eyed fans noticed Dakota stepping out in New York City on June 2, noticeably without her engagement ring. The missing sparkler has only fuelled breakup speculations, which insiders now claim feel "final this time".
While Dakota's missing engagement ring certainly raised eyebrows, it was her striking black ensemble that truly stole the spotlight.

Dakota Johnson's at Late Night with Seth Meyers
While promoting her upcoming film Materialists, Dakota turned heads at the Late Night with Seth Meyers studios in a sultry, all-black sheer ensemble, that fans are calling the 2025 version of a "revenge dress"
Taking straight from Nensi Dojaka's Spring/Summer 2025 collection, the dress was crafted in pale black tulle, featuring a body-hugging silhouette with sheer fabric, delicate asymmetric cuts and sculptural ruffles.
Dakota styled the look with a pair of pointed black stiletto pumps, chunky gold hoop earrings, cat-eye sunglasses and a black Saint Laurent shoulder bag. True to her effortless style, she kept her hair in a soft, natural wave, letting the outfit do all the talking. Dakota's makeup was minimal with a clean base, subtle contouring, lightly smoked-out eyes, and a nude lip.
'Revenge dress' trend
The term "revenge dress" dates back to 1994, when Princess Diana donned a striking off-shoulder black silk gown by Christina Stambolian to a charity event, the same night Prince Charles publicly admitted to his affair with Camilla. She had the iconic black dress in her wardrobe for three years but had hesitated to wear it, thinking it might be too daring.
Her former stylist, Anna Harvey, later shared that the goal for that evening was simple, for Diana to look like "a million dollars." And without a doubt, she did exactly that.
Today, the "revenge dress" trend is making a strong comeback as celebrities use bold fashion choices to make statements post-breakup.
