Why is Aashadi Ekadashi Celebrated?

On Aashadi Ekadashi, it is believed that Lord Vishnu falls asleep on the cosmic serpent Sheshnag in the Ksheer Sagar (Ocean of Milk). He remains in this state for four months until Prabodhini Ekadashi, when he awakens. During this period, known as Chaturmas, many auspicious ceremonies like marriages are put on hold, and devotees focus on penance, prayers, and charity.

It is also said that during Vishnu’s slumber, he entrusts the responsibility of cosmic order and care of the world to Lord Shiva. Observing this fast with devotion is believed to absolve one of sins and bring peace and prosperity.

It is also that on this day, The Vitthal Warkaris of Maharashtra reach the holy town of Pandharpur after a long foot journey. It is a celebration of devotion.

How to perform Aashadi Ekadashi puja and vrat?

Here’s a step-by-step guide to the rituals observed on this sacred day:

Early Morning Bath: Wake up before sunrise, bathe, and wear clean, preferably yellow or white clothes.

Altar Preparation: Install an idol or image of Lord Vishnu/ Lord Vitthal in your prayer area.

Lighting the Lamp: Light a ghee diya in front of the deity, symbolising divine illumination.

Offerings: Present Tulsi leaves, yellow flowers, fruits, and seasonal offerings as bhog.

Reading the Katha: Recite or listen to the story of Ekadashi Vrat to understand its significance.

Aarti and Prasad: Perform Aarti and distribute the bhog as prasad among family and visitors.

Devotees also refrain from consuming grains and cereals and maintain a sattvic diet throughout the day. Some choose to remain awake at night, chanting Vishnu Sahasranama and other hymns.

Also follow these rituals:

Charity on this day is believed to yield manifold merit. Consider donating clothes, food, or essentials to those in need.

Chanting “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” is highly recommended for spiritual upliftment.

Chant Vitthal Abhangs and indulge in chanting lord's name in 'maal jaap'.
