Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Icy winds have dropped the day time temperatures in Madhya Pradesh by 3 degree Celsius, resulting in the increased chills in cities like Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, Gwalior, and the Chambal region.

However, the night-time temperatures have risen due to the influence of Cyclone 'Fengal.' In several cities, nighttime temperatures are above 17 degrees. This weather pattern is expected to continue for the next two days before nighttime temperatures begin to fall.

What do meteorologists say?

According to IMD Bhopal’s senior scientist VS Yadav, "Cyclone 'Fengal' has brought cloud cover across the state, leading to higher nighttime temperatures. This effect may last for two more days, after which night temperatures will drop rapidly."

Northern winds have intensified, blowing at an average speed of 8 to 12 km/h. High-altitude jet stream winds, moving at 268 km/h over western and northern India, will eventually bring more cold to the state as they descend. This will significantly lower both day and night temperatures.

Weather pattern to fluctuate for next 15 days

The Meteorological Department forecasts fluctuating weather patterns for the next 15 days. Severe cold is expected to begin from December 20 and continue till January. During this period, cold waves can be witnessed for 20-22 days, especially affecting Ujjain, Gwalior, and Chambal due to icy winds from the north. Rainfall (locally known as ‘Mawtha’) is also possible in the second half of December.

Temperature records

On Wednesday, many districts, including Bhopal, remained cloudy, and this will continue for another day or two. However, no rainfall is expected.

Gwalior-Chambal currently experiences the most intense cold, with Gwalior recording 11.4°C on Tuesday night. Other regions like Bhind, Morena, Sheopur, and Datia also saw lower temperatures. Meanwhile, cities such as Bhopal (15.8°C), Indore (18.4°C), Ujjain (16.5°C), and Jabalpur (12.6°C) experienced warmer nights.

November witnessed record-breaking cold. In Bhopal, temperatures reached a 36-year low, and in cities like Indore, Ujjain, Jabalpur, and Gwalior, temperatures were up to 7 degrees below normal. Senior meteorologist Dr. Ved Prakash Singh predicts that this winter, Gwalior, Ujjain, and the Chambal region will face the harshest cold, with strong cold waves expected.
