Indore (Madhya Pradesh): In a move toward environmental rejuvenation and water conservation in Sanwer assembly seat, water resources minister Tulsiram Silawat inaugurated the revitalisation works of the Ratnatalai pond on Sunday.
“The project, supported under the Jal Ganga Samvardhan Abhiyan, brings a fresh lease of life to a decades-old water body, with a total investment of Rs 71.57 lakh in the latest phase,” the minister said.
Originally built in 1972 by the Water Resources Department, Ratnatalai pond had remained largely non-functional for years despite its potential to irrigate 40 hectares and store 0.24 million cubic meters of water. Initial restoration work began in 2023 with an allocation of Rs 40.30 lakh, which included strengthening the dam, building a sluice gate and 400 meters of pitching.
Responding to public demand and the vision of local leaders, an additional Rs 71.57 lakh was approved in 2024. These funds enabled 1,100 meters of upstream pitching, 1,000 meters of paver block laying, tree plantation along the dam, and construction of cement-concrete steps, transforming the pond into both a functional and scenic water body.
Speaking at the event, Silawat said, “This is not just a pond; it’s a symbol of sustainable development, water security and community collaboration. The revived Ratnatalai pond will serve irrigation needs, help maintain ecological balance and open new avenues for local tourism.” He also directed officials to ensure year-round water availability by connecting the pond to the Narmada-Shipra Link Project.
In a noteworthy announcement, Silawat said the pond will be handed over to the Sanwer Municipal Council for long-term maintenance and development as a tourist and water-awareness hub. He also urged citizens to participate in the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, encouraging everyone to plant at least one tree in their mother's name.
Silawat hailed the Jal Ganga Samvardhan Abhiyan as a mission to revive traditional water bodies and tackle the water crisis at the grassroots level. “Projects like Ratnatalai are excellent examples of what community will, government support, and environmental awareness can achieve together,” he added.
The event saw the participation of a large number of villagers, students, public representatives, and officials, underscoring the strong community involvement in the project. “Plans are already underway to develop the surrounding area into a tourism and education center focused on water conservation and environmental stewardship,” Silawat concluded.
