Indore (Madhya Pradesh): Despite Indore being declared beggar-free, Devguradia area is witnessing a growing influx of child beggars, particularly around the Gutkeshwar Mahadev temple. Over 10 children, along with elderly women and disabled persons, have reportedly made the temple stairs their regular begging spot, causing inconvenience to devotees and locals alike.

Ritesh Puri, temple priest, has submitted a written complaint to Collector Asheesh Singh, stating that the temple area has effectively become a hub for beggars. He, along with local residents, voiced their concerns during a recent public grievance hearing, citing a deteriorating spiritual atmosphere and disruption to visitors.

The Women and Child Development Department has so far rescued over 1,000 beggars, with many habitual beggars sent to Seva Dham Ashram in Ujjain for 15-day rehabilitation. However, after the ashram stopped accepting new admissions from Indore, rescue operations have slowed significantly.

Sources say the shortage of space and lack of secure shelters are major roadblocks to effective enforcement. While temporary arrangements are being made in city night shelters, ongoing security concerns are undermining the drive.

With the holy month of Sawan round the corner, return of beggars threatens to overshadow efforts by district administration to uphold Indore’s beggar-free status.
