Indore (Madhya Pradesh): The next time you encounter a beggar, think twice before doling out any money, as it may lead to legal consequences. On the contrary, if you provide verified information about a beggar, the administration will reward you with Rs 1,000 for your input.

The administration has initiated strict measures to eliminate begging in the city. Under a new order issued by collector Asheesh Singh on Friday, begging has been completely banned in the district. To strengthen the campaign, a reward of Rs 1,000 will be given to anyone who provides verified information about individuals begging on the streets.

The order, issued under Section 163 of the Indian Civil Protection Act, 2023, prohibits all forms of begging and forbids citizens from giving alms or purchasing items from beggars.   Violators of the order, including those who give alms or buy goods from beggars, will face legal action. The prohibition has been enforced with immediate effect.

Citizens can report incidents of begging by contacting Dinesh Mishra, project officer, women and child development department, at 9691494951.

There are several reasons for curbing the malpractice. Begging at traffic signals and public places increases the risk of accidents and is also often linked to illegal activities.

Many beggars are involved in drug use, substance abuse or other harmful activities and their presence at intersections, religious sites and tourist locations creates a public nuisance.
