Indore (Madhya Pradesh): Holi, the festival of colours, brings joy, laughter, and vibrant hues, but it also poses risks to the skin due to chemical-based colours and prolonged sun exposure. To ensure a safe and skin-friendly Holi, dermatologist Dr Shuken Dashore shares essential preventive measures and emergency care tips for protecting the skin from harmful effects.

Preventive measures

Before playing Holi

* Apply a thick layer of coconut oil or cream on the face and hair to create a protective barrier against colour absorption.

* Use a moisturising lotion or oil-based moisturiser at least one hour before stepping out.

* Avoid playing Holi with dry skin; always apply a hand moisturiser before applying colours. - Choose skin-friendly colours - Avoid synthetic and chemical-based colours; opt for herbal or organic colours.

For homemade herbal colours:

Yellow – Mix turmeric (haldi) with water and add arrowroot powder; let it dry in sunlight.

Pink – Use beetroot extract with arrowroot powder.

Green – Use spinach juice with arrowroot powder.

During Holi

* Keep colours away from the eyes and sensitive areas to prevent irritation and allergies.

* Do not rub colours off aggressively; avoid applying lemon or harsh chemicals to remove colours. Post-Holi Skincare Routine

* Reapply moisturiser immediately after playing and let it soak into the skin for a few hours before taking a bath.

* Avoid scrubbing the skin with a pumice stone or harsh soap to remove colours quickly.

* After bathing, apply moisturiser three to four times to restore hydration.

When to consult a doctor

While minor itching and redness can be treated at home using anti-allergic creams, severe reactions may require medical attention. Seek a doctor immediately if you experience:

* Intense itching that does not subside.

* Swelling on the mouth, lips, or eyes.

* Unbearable redness or burning sensation.

* Severe allergic reactions requiring an anti-allergy injection.
