Indore (Madhya Pradesh): The rising heat is making an impact not just on power demand and daily routines, but also on the Kamla Nehru Prani Sangrahalaya, commonly known as the city zoo.

The blazing sun and high humidity have led to a noticeable decline in the number of weekend visitors, with authorities reporting a 20 to 25 per cent drop in footfall over recent weeks.

Typically buzzing with families, children and tourists, the zoo now sees around 12,000 to 15,000 visitors on weekends, a noticeable dip from the usual 18,000 to 20,000. Weekday numbers are even lower, indicating that the relentless heat is deterring people from stepping out for leisure activities.

“People usually flock to the zoo in large numbers, especially during holidays and weekends. But with the mercury hovering near 40°C and the hot sun beating down intensely, visitors are clearly hesitant,” said zoo in-charge Dr Uttam Yadav.

Needless to state, in view of the hot spell, the animals are also being carefully monitored and the zoo authorities are taking measures to keep them cool and comfortable. Water sprinklers, shade nets and cool shelters have been arranged in enclosures. The staff has also adjusted feeding schedules, offering summer-friendly diets like juicy fruits and electrolyte-rich drinks to ensure animal health.

“Animal health is our top priority. We have installed foggers, fans and sprinklers in enclosures and our veterinary team is keeping a watch on the health of the animals,” Dr Yadav said.
