Indore (Madhya Pradesh): With cutting-edge technology and world-class medical facilities, Sri Aurobindo Hospital, Madhya Pradesh’s largest private healthcare institution, continues to offer a new lease of life to patients across the state.

In a recent case, the hospital successfully treated a critically ill infant from Gujarat using advanced nuclear medicine techniques, something that had not been possible in several hospitals in Gujarat.

Sharing details of the case, the hospital’s managing director Dr Mehak Bhandari said that the infant, less than a year-old from Vadodara (Gujarat), had been suffering from rectal bleeding for nearly three months. Despite visiting multiple doctors in Gujarat, the child’s condition remained undiagnosed and untreated.

Eventually, the parents brought the child to Sri Aurobindo Hospital in Indore. Under the leadership of Dr GN Mahapatra, director of the nuclear medicine department, a sophisticated diagnostic test was conducted using isotope-based imaging, which pinpointed the root cause as Meckel’s Diverticulum, a rare abnormality in the small intestine.

The contribution of Dr Arun Chauhan, professor of nuclear medicine, was especially significant. The diagnosis revealed that the tissue in the affected section of the small intestine had transformed into gastric (stomach) tissue, which was causing the bleeding.

Such abnormalities often go undetected through regular diagnostic procedures, leading to delays in treatment and potentially life-threatening blood loss.

Once the cause was accurately identified, a team of doctors comprising Dr Adwait Prakash, Dr Pankaj Shastri, Dr Gunjan Kela and Dr Sarita Gohiya (anesthesia) performed a successful surgery to remove the abnormal tissue, effectively saving the child’s life.

It is worth noting that such advanced nuclear medicine diagnostics are available only in a few premier hospitals in India and Sri Aurobindo Hospital is one of them. Dr Adwait Prakash reported that the child was currently recovering in the ICU and showing steady improvement, with doctors hopeful of a discharge soon.
