With memories of severe water shortage in last year's Summer fresh, the water board in Bengaluru has announced steep fine for use of drinking water for other purposes. In its order, Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has even prohibited use of potable water to wash vehicles and for gardening.
The order has been issued under Sections 33 and 34 of the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Act 1964. As per the order, if anyone is found to be using potable water for purposes other than drinking, he/ she will attract a fine of Rs 5000.
In addition to prohibiting use of drinking water for gardening and cleaning of vehicles, the board has also banned its use for construction of buildings and roads, for entertainment purposes or in decorations like fountains.
The order also says that potable water in cinema halls and malls is to be used for drinking only.
"In case of violation of prohibitory order, a fine of Rs 5,000 will be applicable for the first time offence and recurrence of this violation will result in a fine of Rs 5,000 with an additional penalty of Rs 500 per day," it stated.
The water board has noted that temperature is rising in the city and groundwater levels are going down due to no rains in recent period. The board has emphasised that saving water is of utmost importance for the city.
The board has appealed people to call its call centre 1916 if anyone is found violating the prohibitory order.
