Ayodhya: A young Indian Army officer Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari showcased exemplary bravery and sacrificed his life to save his fellow soldier. The 22-year-old Army officer from Sikkim Scouts died while rescuing a fellow soldier from drowning in a gushing mountain stream in the Himalayan state, a Defence statement said on Friday. Lt Tiwari was commissioned into the Indian Army just six months ago.

On Friday, Lt Tiwari was leading a route-clearing team towards a tactical forward base being established in the high-altitude terrain of North Sikkim on Thursday morning. During this operational patrol, Agniveer Stephan Subba lost his balance while crossing a makeshift log bridge and was swiftly carried away by the strong current. The incident took place at around 11 am.

"Without hesitation, Lt. Tiwari plunged into the frigid waters to save his teammate. He was soon joined by Naik Pukar Katel, and together, they managed to pull Subba to safety. However, in the process, Lt. Tiwari himself was overcome by the force of the current and swept away. His body was recovered nearly 800 meters downstream within half an hour," the statement said as quoted by PTI.
