New Delhi: Indian Police Service (IPS) officer S B K Singh has been given additional charge as Commissioner of Delhi Police. Singh is currently serving as the Director General of Home Guards. According to an order issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Thursday, he will take over the new role from August 1.
Singh was given the additional responsibility after the end of the tenure of the incumbent police commissioner, Sanjay Arora. Arora is retiring today, July 31.
Who Is SBK Singh?
Singh is a 1988-batch IPS officer of the AGMUT cadre. During his illustrious career spanning over 36 years, Singh has held several key postings in the Delhi Police and also served as the head of police forces in two northeastern states -- Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh.
He is an alumnus of St. Stephen's College, University of Delhi. He joined the Indian Police Service after graduating in 1986. Later, he completed an MBA with a specialisation in Human Resource Management.
Singh had also served as Additional DCP of South, and DCP in both Northeast and Central districts in Delhi in his previous postings. As Special CP (Security), he led several high-profile security operations, including the Republic Day celebrations in 2015 during the visit of then US President Barack Obama and the Indo-Africa Forum Summit the same year.
During his tenure as DGP of Mizoram, he reportedly took several progressive initiatives, such as the launch of the state's first all-women police station. He also implemented e-challaning for traffic violations.
In Arunachal Pradesh, Singh launched the Arunachal Suraksha Mobile Application. He has also served for over seven years in the Cabinet Secretariat (RAW).
