Gurdaspur: Amid rising gang rivalries in Punjab, gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria’s mother and relative were shot dead in the Gurdaspur district last week. The double murder, which took place in Batala on Thursday night (June 26), was carried out by three bike-borne assailants who fired indiscriminately at a Scorpio vehicle carrying Harjeet Kaur and Karanveer Singh.
While Karanveer died on the spot, Harjeet succumbed to her injuries later at a private hospital in Amritsar. The Davinder Bambiha gang has since claimed responsibility for the attack.
Who is Jaggu Bhagwanpuria?
Jagdeep Singh, more commonly known as Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, is one of Punjab’s most infamous gangsters. A resident of Gurdaspur, Jaggu has a sprawling criminal record with at least 128 cases against his name, ranging from murder and extortion to drug trafficking and illegal weapons possession. His notoriety has earned him a feared reputation not only in Punjab but also across India’s criminal network. He is also known to be the mentor of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.
Jaggu first rose to public infamy after being named an accused in the high-profile murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala in 2022, reportedly carried by the Bishnoi gang. According to a statement by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in March 2025, “His established linkages with international operatives in Canada, United States, and Pakistan warranted his relocation to disrupt the ecosystem facilitating continued criminal activity.”
He has since been detained under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (PITNDPS) and shifted from Bathinda’s high-security prison to Silchar Jail in Assam as part of a broader crackdown on crime syndicates operating from behind bars.
Bambiha Gang Admits to Attack, Says Relative Was the Target
The deadly attack appears to be part of an ongoing turf war. A social media post from an account named ‘Gopi Ghanshyampuria’ claimed responsibility on behalf of the Davinder Bambiha gang, stating that the intended target was Karanveer Singh, whom they accused of running operations for the Bhagwanpuria gang.
The post described the killing as “revenge” for the murder of their associate, Gore Bariyar.
